The Pizza Guy

Kitty Kat likes her pizza. I am not a huge fan of the 'za but I will go along with it whenever she wants. In my mind pizza is for game day, hanging with the boys (or now days the kids) and of course mid-night in the dorms. Reminds me of ordering Dominoes pizza to the wrong dorm room hoping there would be an extra pizza in his car while the guy was delivering the pizza to the wrong dorm. We spent a lot of time coming up with that plan. No such luck with the free pizza that night but Skates, in checking for the extra pizza in the driver's car, found the guys bong and stash. That wasn't my thing but I always laughed that the pizza guy didn't think to lock his doors... and that he was delivering pizza stoned.

Fast forward 20+ years. We order pizza from the local Round Table Pizza about once a week I would say. We have a variety of pizza delivery people but we often get one guy. The guy is about 35, very friendly, smiles, looks you in the face, asks if any change is required, etc.... The kids often run to the door and open it before I get there. He usually just gives them the pizza before I even get there to pay. Nice guy. I am not a big tipper but certainly not bad like Roy Williams. Yesterday's total was $18.53 so I gave the guy $21. That's about normal for me, $2-3 for a standard one pizza order.

Now when I see the 35 year old guy I sometimes think I should be tipping more because he is older. Shoot, I could give the five bucks and might help him out more than me!? I haven't necessarily acted on that idea yet but it did get me thinking, what is this guy's story?

Let's say he is 35. Could be 40 for all I know. He speaks clearly so he is not just some random druggie/white trash/drunk. Rather he seems like a normal guy... but he is delivering pizzas in his mid 30's. If I lived in a college town I would assume he is getting his PhD or something but I don't live in a collge town (far from it). Other than the junior college we don't have much around here. I guess he could be going to Slack State for a masters or something!? Otherwise, what could his story be?

Maybe he got a late start in life?

Spent time in the military and is now getting going with post military life?

Maybe he overcame a drug and an alchohol problem and is just now getting going. He is using the pizza job as a stepping stone to something better?

Maybe he worked a real job for a while, got burned out, and is now delivering pizzas while he decides what to do?

Maybe he is a state worker or teacher with a huge adjustable rate mortgage and he is working the extra hours to make ends meet?

Does he have a family?

Do any of you wonder stuff like this or just me? Help me out here. Give me the guy's story!

Unfortunately I think I have to take credit for the lame pizza-scam idea. Back, back in the day I witnessed a friend of mine order 9 pizzas to "Y-house" and 1 to the dorms. At the time the pizza guy had to stop at the dorms first due to the 30 min. delivery rule. Timing was everything. The pizza guy would show up with the $7 cheese pizza and would be paid for as regular. While this transaction was taking place, this friend,(more like an distant aquaintance would liberate the remaining 9 pizzas from the delivery car. The pizza guy returns and drives away not realizing the pizza is gone until he is at "Y-house". The rest is self-explanatory including the part where pizza-perp calls dominoes and cancels the order due to it taking too long. I'd like to say that I got some free pizza that night but the next part of story is where me and my roommates sat and watched this juiced-up F-ball player scarf all 9 pizzas by himself. Apparently steroids make you hungry. -dlatz
