I know the SacTownGuy has not been posting this week as usual. Just too busy here at the office. Between ESPN.com, CBS Sportsline message boards, and all the rest I am just too busy to post. Why? It's that time of year... MARCH MADNESS! I really love March Madness. I love going to the games even though I might not be going this year, I love watching the games, I love the brackets, I love talking about it, I love the whole deal. College football is just so antiquated to have their dumb ass bowls that NOBODY, except people in the southern and/or the fly over states, care about. Seriously, who really cares about the Meinke Car Care Bowl? For that matter, who really cares about the Sugar Bowl? For me, there is ONE bowl game that matters; the BCS Championship... and even that isn't nearly as exciting as an opening round game in the NCAA Hoops tourney.
I have been watching more TV this week than I do all year because I don't like TV much... and this is just the conference tournaments right now. However, I feel to accurately fill out my brackets I need to know who is hot, who is not, and all that sort of stuff. What's up the Pac 10 bubble teams? U of A is IN I know that. Oregon is probably IN. However, what's up with ASU? I didn't think they were very good when they got up to about 15th in the country and I don't think they are very good now. I would say of the 7 Pac 10 teams that should make the tourney they are by far the weakest. I would say even Cal, and Washington (if their big guy hadn't broken a bone), are better than ASU. Really, ASU has ONE player. If ASU makes it into the field of 64 (I don't play that field of 65 nonsense) I say you knock them out in the first round no matter who they play. I could see them as an 11 v. 7 game against a team like St. Mary's and I would take St. Mary's and the points!
I have spent as much time as possible in my car this week maxing out my time listening to the "experts" on XM Radio (I flip between 140 and 142 and if you are a sports fan, with XM, you know what those are). I have listened to every guru give his thoughts, cinderellas, underdogs, overrated, favorites to win, etc... and what do I say?
Ok, let's start with my cinderellas. You know I bet from the heart which is why I don't gamble in real life. I thus go with the USU Aggies to win a game after they win the WAC tourney. They will be about a 13 seed or maybe a 14 seed. Stew Morrell has some ugly 1979 glasses (with the tint) but he can flat out coach! He usually mixes a team with a few brothas from LA and a few farm boys from northern Utah. He makes it work. "Ok farm boys you guys camp out on the 3 point line... except for you big dopey white guy, you get down in the paint and stay there... I don't care about the dang 3 second rule... just stay there. Ok, and you guys from LA, I want you to run, keep running, and then run some more... and then pass it to the open white guy out on the 3 point line." Hey, it works so go with the Aggies for an upset! I heard some guy on ESPN chopping it up about Kent State as a cinderella. I don't know a thing about them except they beat St. Mary's, who EVERYBODY in the great state of Northern California will have going to the sweet 16, but I am going with Kent State to the sweet 16. I will have St. Mary's lose in the first round for the aforementioned reason so I have a leg up on my nor cal brethren in my pool!
Who is overrated? I don't think Memphis is that good. Who did they beat? Oh ya, NOBODY. Tennessee beat them and I don't think the Vol's are that good even though you know I got love for the Vol's from my time living back there in '85. That was a scary time... could have been 1955, but anyway, I still have love for east TN, like the Vol's, but just don't think they are that great. Back to Memphis... if they were in the Pac 10 they would be about 21 and 9, 3rd place in the Pac 10 and looking at a 3 or 4 seed. I will have Memphis lose in their 2nd or 3rd game depending on match up.
Ok, who will win the whole damn thing? My dream match up is UNC v. UCLA. My homie B is a redneck from Ashville and my neighbor Shooter G is a big UNC fan too. I like to have my team play against my homies team. Would be fun. Plus, it just reeks of TRADITION. Sure UNC doesn't have nearly as many championships as UCLA but they are still a traditional hoops powerhouse. I thus hope for UCLA beating UNC in the finals.
Who will I pick to win it all in my pool? Well, that's a different story. I often pick UCLA to lose early on. That way if they are upset I can say, "I knew they would lose and now my brackets are better than most because a lot of people in Cali have UCLA winning the whole thing...." If, on the other hand, UCLA goes deep in the tourney I can say, "alright that's my boyz... let's hoist up banner #12 to the rafters of Pauley!"
With that I gotz to get to work.
Peace out.
