Awkward

Had a retirement party today for our incredible office receptionist. 23 years on the job (since July '85) and she is now moving away. Really one of the best employees I have ever seen. Anyway, had an awkward moment at the party. It was at a nice restaurant in a private room. Probably had about 20 people there. She opened her cards first thing. As typical of an office event we passed the cards around the office the last few days and everybody wrote a few nice words. Of course when you lose such a loyal and great employee some people said a lot. Now, I realize those messages are not "private" per se as you pass the card around the office. I don't know about you but I generally do not read what others have written. I consider it semi-private. This great employee started reading a few of them while we were all sitting there... and she read them aloud to the group. I found it awkward and was glad she didn't read what I wrote. I don't remember what I wrote and maybe it was the greatest thing ever but there is something about hearing your words, in a setting like that, which would not have been comfortable to me. Maybe it's just me but I found it a tad awkward.

Speaking of awkward I didn't tell y'all what happened at the barber shop on Saturday. I went to a small barber shop here in RoseTown with a very overly-friendly barber/owner. He was shaking hands, finding out the customer's names, etc.... I was waiting my turn for a cut when a woman walked in. She was in her mid 50's I would say. She said she was in to buy some shampoo for her husband as the shampoo this barber shop sells is the best dandruff shampoo he has found, yada, yada, yada.... Mr. Overly Friendly Barber asked the customer what her husband's name was. She replied, "it's Dave." [PAUSE PAUSE] "No, I mean it's Jim... Dave is my boss." She went on to say that her husband would find that funny. We laughed and then I told her we would keep that secret amongst us there at the shop... because I am not sure Jim would laugh as much as she thinks he would!

peace out.
