I have a great mother in law. She really has a lot of positive attributes and even her negative ones are positive in ways. She is generous to a fault and will buy your kid everything ever made. If one pair of pajamas is good then certainly 6 or 7 is better. This weekend she took care of our kids for about 24 hours so we could get a night away. Sunday, in typical mother-in-law fashion, she woke up early and took them to Burger King for cini-mini's (something that they do not normally get), then a little later in the morning they went to IHOP for chocolate chip pancakes, then they went to see that new movie Wall-E, then they went to Nordstrom to buy new shoes, and then they went to some jumping horses show at Arco Arena... where she had front row seats of course. The show was at 2:00 so you can see it was a busy morning!
However, who wants to read a positive mother-in-law story? I think most of guys would prefer to think of mothers-in-law in terms of Fred Flinstone's mother-in-law. Here's some lines I found on-line from an old Flinstone's episode:
"Fred: Hi, Mother-in-law dear, how was your trip?
Wilma's Mother: Oh no. He's been at the cactus juice again.
Fred: Can I take your bags? I love my dear sweet mother-in-law.
Wilma's Mother: Stop your mumbling, you've been drinking.
Fred: No I haven't. I just love having you here."
During the weekend Kitty Kat and I spoke of her mom and grandma as often rationalizing ideas in their mind. I acknowledged that they make a statement and then like to stick with it. Even far fetched things. I think they truly believe them eventually.
Anyway, when she dropped the kids back off we told her we had seen Get Smart and what a bad movie it was. She said she was surprised and still wanted to go see it. I said, "why are you surprised it was bad... has there ever been a TV show that was made into a good movie?" The lawyer in her was quick to disagree with me and tell me that of course there were. I asked her to tell me which TV series had been made into a good movie.
Her answer was Charlie's Angels. Kitty Kat and I looked at her with some disbelief to which she replied, "well it didn't get great reviews but I think it was good." I acknowledge I had not seen it but was pretty sure it was not seen as a great movie and thus I was pretty confident in my hypothesis. She continued defending Charlie's Angeles until she finally said... "I actually might not have seen Charlie's Angeles."
That is my mother-in-law for you. The competitive lawyer who will take up a case just to defend the downtrodden like movies made from TV series. Kitty Kat will not live this one down and the Charlies Angels story will be brought up for years to come.
Having finished that story I have to say I was really only making the statement about TV series generally. I wasn't that invested in the idea because undoubtedly there have been some TV series that were made into great movies. The Naked Gun series for example are made from my favorite TV show, Police Squad. I believe the first Naked Gun was officially called, "Naked Gun, from the files of Police Squad." Let's say this: the list of BAD TV series movies is much longer than the list of good TV series movies.
peace out.
