It looks like the SacTownGuy is becoming a restaurant reviewer. That will change eventually but for now that looks like that's all you get. Of course, for those of you who don't live in the greater SacTown metro this maybe especially boring. Keep checking back as I got some material in the hopper....
So we went to the Original Pimp House on Saturday. As usual Andrea kicked us down with our drinks about the time we sat down... in the closed section of the restaurant. It's nice when they open up a section of the restaurant just for you so you can have your regular waitress! Sunday we decided to try a place we had not been before... Toast. It's up in G'bay... in the snooty part of town. It's in a fancy strip center called Quarry Ponds. Has about 15 stores and restaurants including a fresh food mart with high quality meats and veggies. Toast is a breakfast and lunch establishment. Looks nice from the outside but couldn't see much as the main part of the restaurant is not visible from the entrance. Menu looked standard though even pricier than the OPH if you can believe it!
Once inside the main dining room it looks out over a large pond/wetlands type area. Really a beautiful setting once you are sitting down. The restaurant itself is relatively plain but the view is special. Lots of ducks and what not flying into the pond. Just a real nice way to spent a Sunday morning. A few of the customers had definitely moved from LA or the Bay and still head on their big city clothes and glasses. It made me feel like a cow towner but what can you do!? How was the food? How was the service?
Well, it took a while to get a drink. Yes, Andrea spoils us at OPH and we just aren't used to common level of service anymore. Unlike the Professor last Sunday (which had too much staff and will probably be BK by year end because of it) Toast had too little staff. At 8:30 Sunday morning they had one person sitting us AND she was the only wait staff and busser! So she had about 5 or 6 tables and she was seating new customers. Bottom line, though she was a very conscious employee (I even saw her running to serve better) she just couldn't handle the crowd. At 9:00 a few more employees came in to give it a normal staffing level. However, for the top dollar you pay I would say the staffing levels were unacceptable.
Ok, but what about the food? I have to say the food was pretty good. I had a Spanish omelet with nice avocado and tons of salsa. I ordered it with no cheese and no sour cream. For some reason they didn't believe me and put cheese inside AND on top. As far as I am concerned cheese is straight FAT and I really don't need it. I thus was disappointed by that. However, it was so slow to get the food I wasn't about to send it back! Overall the food was very good. The red skinned potatoes had no oil on them and the fresh fruit side was more significant than most offer. Kitty Kat had a side of bacon and it was similar to the OPH. All in all it was high quality fare.
At the end it took a few minutes to get our bill. Our waitress comped us our drinks with an apology for slow service. As I said, she was very good... just needed 2 or 3 of her to make the place run better! Nice place to take the out of towners from the big city! As we joked, you could take out of town company to the professor but you would tell them they aren't allowed to use the bathroom! Toast had a very nice bathroom with fancy granite all around... though the towels and toilet paper boxes were stacked up under the beautiful granite sink. Not sure who designed that storage system!
All in all I would say it does NOT top OPH but it would be a nice place to take out of town company or possibly go without the kids. I suggest you give it a try!
peace out.
