I certainly had no intention of becoming a restaurant reviewer... and primarily a breakfast restaurant reviewer at that... but yet again I have info to share with my vast readership that makes me sound like James Beard of the greater SacTown metro area.
Saturday we went to OPH and we were spoiled as usual by Andrea and the rest of the crew. The food is just so much better there that it's worth the extra money. Throw the great service on top of it and it's a no brainer. Why would people eat breakfast anywhere else?
However, Sunday, Kitty Kat wanted to save a few bucks and suggested we go to IHOP. Let me start by saying most people confuse "The Original Pancake House" (aka: The Original Pimp House and aka: OPH) with "The International house of Pancakes" (aka: The International Slop House and aka: IHOP). Let's make it clear there are few similarities beyond the names having the words "the," "house," and "pancakes." Though they both serve pancakes, omlettes, bacon and all the rest... they actually serve DIFFERENT food. Really. The Pimp House buys their food products from better quality suppliers... MUCH better, is cleaner, has higher class staff, uses fresh ingredients, and the list goes on.
Let me get snobby on you for a minute... you know what made me want to go start a new post? The clientele at the two places. YES, OPH costs more than IHOP. I would say it's about $40 + tip versus $25 + tip. So call it $48 versus $30. That's a big difference I realize. Let me say in the gentlest way possible... the cost difference shows up in the customers. I mean seriously. Yes, there are plenty of regular looking people like me and probably most of YOU reading this blog. However, there are also some greasy, nasty, tatt'd up people who look they got released the day before and this is the first meal out in the real world. I mean seriously there are some scary and nasty looking people. I should have broken out the camera phone because I can't think of any other good words to describe the people... besides scary and nasty looking. However, they didn't look like the kind of people who would take kindly to my camera phone!
You just get the feeling that at IHOP it's a special treat to be out and at the Pimp House it's just another day in the week to eat out.
Let me sum it up another way... if you like IHOP go try OPH and then tell me how much better OPH is and how totally worth the extra money it is! I mean it. Go do it. Stop reading. Go. Come on. Go.
Peace out.
